Doctorate of science in administration to debut
UAB will offer an Executive Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Administration within the School of Health Professions to train a new generation of leaders incorporating analytical skills required to manage today’s complex health-care organizations. Beginning in June 2009, the degree program will enroll at least 12 executives per year. For information e-mail phdha@uab.edu.

Literary magazine wins national honor
PMS poemmemoirstory, a national literary magazine published by the UAB Department of English, has been recognized by The Best American Essays series for 2008. PMS is a journal of women’s poetry, memoirs and short stories, and its editor-in-chief is Associate Professor Linda Frost, Ph.D. For subscription information and submission guidelines visit www.pms-journal.org.

UAB robot knocked the blocks off
The UAB Engineering Robotics Team placed first among 20 entries in the SoutheastCon 2008 Region 3 Hardware Contest, beating a Mississippi State team in the finals to claim the top prize. Students programmed the robot, a battery-powered vehicle they named BEPR, to pick up 2-inch cubed, wooden blocks on a course with the help of infrared direction-finding beams. See it in action.

Register for service-learning series finale
A review of service learning at UAB is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30 in Sterne Library Henley Room. Stefan Kertesz, M.D., will introduce The Albert Schweitzer Service Learning Fellowship Program, and an open discussion will examine aspects such as community partnerships, faculty incentives, assessment tools, course designation and other topics participants may select. Register for the luncheon online.

State ethics filing deadline is April 30
UAB employees who meet certain criteria are required to file their annual economic interests form with the Alabama Ethics Commission by April 30. The forms are available on BlazerNET on the Employee Resources tab.

Will you lead a meaningful dialogue about the weather?
Volunteer facilitators are needed for the Freshman Discussion Groups to be held Monday, Aug. 18 following a presentation about the 2008 Discussion Book topic, led by its author. E-mail Juanita Sizemore by May 1 to volunteer; facilitators will receive a copy of Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change by Elizabeth Kolbert, and training sessions will be held Aug. 14-15.

BookTalk text is Lost City Radio
Lost City Radio by Daniel Alarcon is the text selected for the May 6 UAB BookTalk book club meeting. Professor Bill Hutchings, Ph.D., will lead the discussion beginning at 6 p.m. in the Sterne Library Henley Room. The club is free and open to the public. UAB BookTalk meets from 6 to 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

T32 research fellowship application deadline nearing
NIH/NRSA fellowships are available beginning July 1 for a research training program in surgical oncology. This training program is designed to provide research training for surgical residents interested in pursuing academic careers in surgical oncology-related disciplines. Medical students to march for the uninsured April 28
UAB medical students will conduct a march through UAB as part of activities marking Cover the Uninsured Week. The march, starting at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital at 5 p.m. Monday, April 28, will draw attention to the more than 47 million Americans who are uninsured.

Ireland Prize dinner, lecture set for May 1
Psychologist Karlene Ball has won the 2008 Carolyn P. and Charles W. Ireland Prize for Scholarly Distinction. A dinner and lecture will be held 6:45 p.m. Thursday, May 1 in the Alys Stephens Center upper lobby. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. in the Stephens Center downstairs lobby. Tickets are $20 each. Renowned Egyptologist to speak May 2
Egyptologist Edwin “Ted” Brock will discuss the reconstruction of the sarcophagus of Pharaoh Ramses VI, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 2 in Heritage Hall Room 106. Admission is free and open to the public.
